Hundreds in Unity March to Free Oscar López Rivera PDF Imprimir Correo

oscarOn Saturday, November 23, 2013 hundreds participated in a Unity March to Free Oscar Lopez Rivera, a Puerto Rican nationalist who has been incarcerated in the U.S. for over 32 years. Among those marching were Calle 13's Rene "Residente" Perez and NYC Councilwoman Rosie Mendez.

Already 70 years old, Oscar’s imprisonment constitutes an ongoing human rights violation. Like his 13 co-defendants released since 1999, he is imprisoned under charges that do not include the killing or harming of any persons, and has gained the support of the international community that sees him as a patriot.

Initiated by the Commoscarunity Coalition for the Freedom of Oscar López Rivera, the NYC march coincided with numerous marches the same day throughout Puerto Rico initiated by 32 X Oscar and El Comité Pro Derechos Humanos. The local procession started at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center on the Lower East Side and ended at Continental Army Plaza in Los Sures, Brooklyn, via the Williamsburg Bridge.

The November 23 march in NYC was organized in support of such developments, and in that spirit the Community Coalition for the Freedom of Oscar López Rivera worked in unity with schools, churches, community organizations, unions, and human rights groups, in addition to activists, community members, and elected officials.
