Puerto Rico Solidarity Network Initiative
The past three years Puerto Rico has confronted a hurricane of historic magnitude, earthquakes in the south of Puerto Rico with material and social destruction, the current pandemic of COVID 19 a Financial Control Board superimposed by the U.S. government and the ever increasing de-population especially of younger residents, and pervasive corruption. This and many other factors brought the people out massively to call for the resignation of the corrupt governor in 2019. Alas, the corruption is still alive and we continue to face the colonial reality. More so, we now face a new statehood query in November scurrilously approved in the middle of the present pandemic as part of the Statehood party to further push their argument for complete integration. It is time to once again reach out to progressives internationally and in the U.S. to shatter the silence that too often exists on the issue of Puerto Rico. We invite you and /or your organization to be part of the Puerto Rico Solidarity Initiative. We propose October 30th, which commemorates the 1950 Nationalist uprising in Puerto Rico as the Day of Solidarity with Puerto Rico. During this year of 2020 on that day we propose a social media campaign which will make visible the struggle of Puerto Rico for self determination and sovereignty. The message will emphasize the need for resolution of the colonial reality through the collective will of the people of Puerto Rico for the country's decolonization. This seeks to foment discussion on the existence of U.S. colonies and the right of all peoples to their self determination and freedom. In this first phase, the campaign will be canalized though social media. We will generate a general promotion with specific hashtags to be used as the means to create a uniformed campaign while encouraging the input each individual or organization esteems necessary. The general hashtags are: #FreePR #IndependenciaYa #LibertadPuertoRico. |
